Bridal Veil Falls
Welcome to spring in the Whites!
Bridal Veil Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in Franconia, and it’s a great pick for spring. It’s a fairly easy hike along the Coppermine Trail with an elevation of 1100 ft, so very little incline. The trail goes along the Coppermine River for most of the hike and is 2.5 miles to the falls. This is a nice hike for beginners and anyone who doesn’t want a lot of incline but still wants to see something beautiful.
Note – if you are looking this hike up on AllTrails it is listed as the Bridal Veil Falls Trail in the White Mountains National Forest. If searching through the White Mountain Guidebook (an absolute must for hikers) the trail to the falls is Coppermine Trail.
April is a tricky month for hiking as the weather can change on a dime. True, it’s getting warmer and there is a lot of melt down from the mountains. This is great for our rivers and waterfalls, but not always good for the hiking trails. If you don’t have micro spikes, think twice before hitting a trail. Please research the current conditions on AllTrails or check on newenglandtrailconditions.com for updated reports. Not only do you have to fight mud and water right now, but the ice that lies beneath it, and the sometimes-massive monorails that have formed throughout the winter on the trails. Some of these are easily avoidable depending on the trail, but higher elevations are usually colder and take much longer to melt down, thus the need for proper gear.
Another spring possibility – sudden snowstorms and upper elevation meltdowns can make for what we like to call ‘mashed potatoes.’ Because of this, you might need snowshoes. Yes, you are reading this correctly. Again, we recommend that you research the trail conditions ahead of time to be prepared.
Enjoy the spring hiking season!
